U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Carlos Gutiérrez is urging Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform this year, reports La Opinion. Gutiérrez described the current system as "entirely without practice, without a moral sense, and without a logical, economic sense." He was referring to the recent Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) raids in Postville, Iowa, which made headlines inside, and outside, the U.S. During that raid, ICE arrested 389 undocumented immigrants, the majority of whom were Latino and are currently facing deportation. In the absence of a comprehensive immigration reform, Gutiérrez asserted that state and local governments must take their own measures to combat the hiring of undocumented workers. Gutiérrez will meet with members of Congress next week in Atlanta, Georgia to discuss immigration reform8/19/2008
